Here’s the story of HOW WE BEGAN

Our story began in the Song Dynasty.

Over a thousand years ago, monks practiced Dian Cha (the art of tea-whisking) as a form of meditation. Slow and deliberate, this ritual fosters focus and inner peace. Jian ware was crafted exclusively for this practice.

The wares were made using 27°N iron-rich clays, it features a thick body for heat preservation, a glaze fired at 1,300°C to preserve tea aroma, and a shape-fitting designed to create a smooth whisking foam—making it the ideal vessel for Dian Cha.

Authentic Jian ware undergoes 13 intricate steps and more than 36 hours of high-temperature firing. Emerging from the kiln in unpredictable patterns and colors, every piece is uniquely its own.

Though the art of tea-whisking and Jian ware faded over time, both have been rediscovered and reimagined for the modern world.

To honor this heritage, the Rawthen team traveled to the birthplace of Jian ware to learn from its master artisans. We preserve traditional craftsmanship while shaping it into modern forms. Our contemporary Jian ware collection is made for tea, crystal, and incense rituals.
