Our Beginning

Our pottery begins with ε-Fe₂O₃.

For thousands of years, pottery has linked humans to the natural world and to each other. We sourced the clay from 27°N when fired at 1300°C, it undergoes a transformation where ε-Fe₂O₃ precipitates and settles, becoming an integral part of the pottery body itself.

Research from LBNL reveals that ε-Fe₂O₃ is marked by extremely persistent magnetization and is difficult to create with modern techniques.

Pottery carrying rare ε-Fe₂O₃ gathers the earth’s magnetism, inviting a return to inner stillness and connection.

RARE MATERIALS

The rare clay of pottery only from 27°N, we celebrate the inherent material qualities of the earth.

During the high-temperature firing process, the glaze starts to melt. Once the temperature reaches 1240°C, the iron oxides in the glaze are thermally reduced and release oxygen.

Eventually, ε-Fe₂O₃ precipitates and settles on the surface. Rare ε-Fe₂O₃ bridges historical tradition with the frontiers of advanced technology.

‘In my hands, I carry the earth’s magnetism—not just a fistful of clay.’

HANDMADE BY ARTISANS

Each RAWTHEN piece is handmade by skilled artisans at 27°N.

Our pottery carries the honest signs of the craft: surface pitting, polishing lines, and ripples.

We celebrate these textures as the very traits that distinguish our work from the mass-produced.

‘Each artisan chooses to render these pieces by hand on a wheel, animating clay as they draw out shapes in space.’

ONE OF ONE, BY NATURE

The control of the atmosphere during firing determines the oxidation state of the iron within the body, the glaze, and upon the surface.

By its very nature, no two pottery pieces can ever be identical.

It is not applied. It is not added later. It is formed through heat, time, and patience.

This process cannot be rushed, controlled, or precisely repeated. That is precisely the point.

‘The pottery you receive is a unique gift from the earth, shaped by fire just for you.’
